Interview with Jo

Where did you grow up? Tell us about your family – parents, siblings?

I grew up in Taipei, a capital city of Taiwan. My parents were both businessmen, they are both retired now. They got  separated and then divorced when I was in about grade 5.My mother is now living with my younger sister and helping her raise 2 grandchildren. My father married again a few month before I got married with a nice lady, they bought a RV and enjoy traveling around since. I have 2 sisters, my elder sister is an interior designer , married and has 2 kids. My younger sister is a saleswoman, married and has 2 children , also .  My mother has been very devoted to her religious group ( a combination of Taoism and Buddhism ) for many years, my other family members have no interest at all in  anything religious, except for my elder sister, she is fascinated by the new age idea recently and believes that she is her own creator . I have been praying for their salvation with this verse:

Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that you will show kindness to my family, …Give me a sure sign that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them—and that you will save us from death.Joshua2:12-13 NIV

「我既然恩待了你們,現在請你們憑耶和華向我起誓,你們也照樣恩待我家,並且給我一個可靠的憑據, 保證讓我的父母、兄弟、姐妹和他們所有的親人免於一死。」」約書亞記2:12-13 CCB And I believed that The Lord has answered my prayer and gave me a clear, strong sign of confirmation .  I am so looking forward to witness the process of God's mercy pouring on my family and how He is going to make this happen .

You just returned from being home. What were the highlights of your trip? What do you miss most about home?

I miss people and food ... people>food. Reunion with family and friends is priceless, and thanks to Facebook,I was surprised to find out how many people are following me and I don't really need to update them too much. It's amazing to realize that people we know(around us) have been wowed and influenced by God's grace when they witness our journey & testimony following the Lord along the way over these years. When I heard feedbacks from people like " I can see God is so real and tangible in your life" or " it's amazing how God has been leading you..." those are satisfying moments and also highlights in my trip.

I had a wonderful 2 days trip with my mother in law and my husband Daniel to southern part of Taiwan, the "green tunnel " was amazing:https://youtu.be/EJVFHI_3VIo.

What have you found most surprising about living in Wichita, Kansas? What do you enjoy most?

I am so impressed with people here, so nice and willing to help others to reflect their faith in the Lord. Let me give 2 examples outside our First E Free  church. The second day we arrived at Wichita, we went to immigration office to apply for social security number. While we were waiting in the line, there was a black lady in front of me totally amazed me by sharing her husband and son's testimony of miraculous healing, how she treated her daughter 's roommate like her own daughter, and her love for the Lord to people in the line around her. Just within 20 minutes standing and waiting , she shared 3 testimonies, be nice and helpful to others and invite a lady in front of her to church already . Wow!! The other example happened in my BSF class. The ladies in my small group insisted they give me rides home! They told me :You don't want to walk home in the winter here. " regardless the fact that I lived in the apartment just across the street, and I came from Canada.

Besides the nicer weather , smaller community that saves a lot of time traveling from places to places, I really enjoy this healthy and welcoming church, and the idea of encouraging team. I have been happily overwhelmed by the loving and caring cards and goodies and feel totally blessed to be a pastor's wife here!

What or where is your favorite date night with your husband?

My standard of " favorites date" is not really about what to eat or where to go, but about creative, unique, memorable and unforgettable experience. The most recent one was in January,on  our 9th anniversary, we had planned to have some celebration things to do on that weekend but it turned out to be impossible to make them happen .  Ministry needs + unexpected emergency took all our time. Just when I felt like there wouldn't be celebration at all for this year , much to my disappointment , Daniel totally surprised me by reading a poem to me in the fellowship public gathering. He managed to squeeze 5 mins to write that poetry (and rushed to have supper at the same time)before gathering . He neatly knit God's name, his and my name into it, he saved the day. In the end, not only we celebrated the anniversary in a most unforgettable way, but also set a good example for brothers that busyness should not be an excuse to sacrifice marriage and relationship.

Whats the inside of your purse look like? Whats the most random thing in it wed find?  ( see attached photo)

  • I love to use my own cup to enjoy morning coffee provided every Sunday. I am not a obsessed "green" person, but helping to save some disposal cups still makes me feel good.
  • Heart shaped convenient stickers:  I find it super useful ;not only to give away informations like phone number and address, but to express gratitude and thanks. I can also use it to give away scriptures and birthday blessings to specific person when I don't carry any cards with me. The heart shaped note is a great reminder to me to be alert to give messages and to speak to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.(1 Corinthians 14:3 NIV)
  • Kleenex, it's super handy when I pray for ladies .
  • Notebook: I always need it in my purse to catch and remember creative ideas or messages.  As a visual learner, i can always be more organized when I write things down so that I can see it. I draw on it sometimes so it has to be totally blank, no lines.

Is there anything specific the Encouragement Team can be praying for you this month?

For ministry:

  1. 1.   Unity of coworkers and willingness to adopt  new changes , smooth transitions  ,too.
  2. 2.   Wisdom, resources and skills to finish the project that I assigned for myself this year, a  legacy history about this Chinese church in a video form. May God help me not only to get it done but also use it to unify the two congregations.
  3. 3.   My family's salvation and my pregnancy, I have been praying for having children for 7 years.

Thank you again Jo for giving me this opportunity to brush up my English after 37 days no English holiday  to avoid becoming too rusty. If you find my writing is kind of hard to understand, that's probably why. Well, good excuse, isn't it?
